social science: hammurabi's code

  •  Hammurabi was a king of Mesopotamia.
  •  He reigned in Babylon: the richest and the most powerful city.
  • He created the earliest form of laws, Hammurabi's code (282 laws).
  • They were engraved in stone and settled in public places.
  • Based on "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth"(retaliation).
  1. Criminal laws: rules that define conduct.
  2. Civil laws: disputes among individuals.
      * There was an exception: Hammurabi believed gods had power over people and events.

Deberes y Social Science Review

Antes de que se me olvide, vamos a repasar los deberes y sociales.
Primero los deberes. Hay que hacer los ej. de la Plataforma Eleven de matematicas. Para los de Frances hay que estudiar para los examenes los dias 18 de Diciembre y 25 de Enero, tambien hay que hacer en el ordenador los ej. 2 y 3 de la pagina 14. Y por ultimo de los deberes hay sociales. Hay que hacer los ej. 2, 3 y 4 de la pagina 99, de la pagina 100 los ejercicios 1 y el 2 (el dos en el libro) y, traer plastilina y una bolsa para este viernes.

Today we saw The Code of Hammurabi, an interesant Mesopotamian code.
And, we saw the Mesopotamian Society.
Privileged groups had most of the wealth an all the power:

  • The aristocracy
  • Priests
  • Civil servants
Part of the population was free, while slaves had no rights:

  • Peasants
  • Craftsmen
  • Women

Today we talked in class about the society and culture in Mesopotamia.

Society

  •    Privileged groups:
  1. Aristocracy:
                - King's family

                -  Nobility

            * They owned most of the land.
            * They occupied the highest goberment possitions.


     2. Priest:

            * They controled religious rituals.

     3. Civil servants:

               - Like scribes

                  * They can:
                           - read
                           - write
                           - count


  • Most population were free (except slaves):
    4. Peasants:

            - They rented king's land
            - cultivated:
                          * baley
                          * wheat
                          * beans

   5. Craftsmen:

           - worked in workshops
           - They were:

                   * weavers
                   * carpenters
                   * jeweller

  6. Women:

          - men's property
          -  half salary




Religion

            - polytheistic: believed in many gods
               - god were similar to humans but immortals
               -Temples: gods residences: ziggurats




First schools

          - In Mesopotamia
          - Attended: 
  1. Men of rich families
  2. NO GIRLS
  3. scribes
  4. scholars/students
  5. scientist
  6. theologists

social science: early civilizations


EARLY CIVIZATIONS

Today we talked in class about early civilizations.
  • The invention of writing was about 5.000 years ago in Mesopotamia.
  • Writing was an important invention because it marked the beginning of History.
  • It was used for record information about: taxes, population,trade and grain.
                 The first civilizations were:
  1. Mesopotamia.
  2. Egypt.
  3. India.
  4. China.
They were river civilizations because they were near rivers :
  • Mesopotamia: between Euphrates and Tigris.
  • Egypt: Nile river.
  • India: Indus river.
  • China: Yellow and Blue river.
In river civilizations were:
  •  Hierarchical: they were divided into two clearly differnt groups:
  1. Rich people: they owned most of  land.A minority.
  2. Poor people: they were the majority of population.
  • The king was the most important person, he made law, he had religious functions, he led the army:civil servants.
  • There were large-scale building works:palaces, tombs, temples and canals.
