social science: early civilizations


EARLY CIVIZATIONS

Today we talked in class about early civilizations.
  • The invention of writing was about 5.000 years ago in Mesopotamia.
  • Writing was an important invention because it marked the beginning of History.
  • It was used for record information about: taxes, population,trade and grain.
                 The first civilizations were:
  1. Mesopotamia.
  2. Egypt.
  3. India.
  4. China.
They were river civilizations because they were near rivers :
  • Mesopotamia: between Euphrates and Tigris.
  • Egypt: Nile river.
  • India: Indus river.
  • China: Yellow and Blue river.
In river civilizations were:
  •  Hierarchical: they were divided into two clearly differnt groups:
  1. Rich people: they owned most of  land.A minority.
  2. Poor people: they were the majority of population.
  • The king was the most important person, he made law, he had religious functions, he led the army:civil servants.
  • There were large-scale building works:palaces, tombs, temples and canals.
